The Greater Greenville Master Gardener Association (GGMGA) is an educational, non-profit service organization consisting of certified Clemson Extension Master Gardeners. The GGMGA works in partnership with the Clemson University Extension Office as a service arm of Extension Horticulture, providing non-biased, research-based horticultural information to diverse groups of people within the Greenville County area. What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture and their volunteer work in the community.
Our members are volunteer educators who work through the local Clemson Extension Office, as well as through our own organization to fulfill our mission of education and service. Typical volunteer activities include answering plant and gardening questions at Ask-a-Master Gardener booths, at Farmers Markets and other locations; conducting education events at local garden sites, such as Roper Mountain Science Center’s Butterfly Garden, Heritage Garden, and Herb Garden, which we also maintain; staffing Speakers Bureau requests for educational presentations; and working with school gardens and community garden projects.
Our Association provides instructions to youngsters in grades 3 - 5 to become Jr. Master Gardeners. Students can select a one or a two-week summer program at Roper Mountain Science Center (RMSC). The program is run and directed by GGMG members and RMSC staff.
Rent-a Master Gardener (RAMG) is a program where interested clients will be directed to an online questionnaire, where they provide the RAMG team with details about concerns in their landscape. A Team Leader schedules a visit with the client. After the visit, team members submit comments to the Team Leader, who then creates a report to be emailed to the client.
We provide grants to fund school gardening programs, community gardens, and beautification projects as well as a host of other projects. We provide scholarships to college students whose field of study is horticulture and others in the community who are taking qualified gardening related courses.
We host a popular annual gardening Symposium for the public, which brings attendees from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. Our spring Plant Sale is one of our most successful ventures, held the last Saturday in April.
Once a Master Gardener, there are multiple ways you can expand your horticultural knowledge. Attending Evening Programs, Day Programs, Field Trips, and our annual Winter Luncheon are examples.
Our password protected Member Center provides information about our Association. There is a list of Executive Committee and Board members, along with their contact information. This is where you record your volunteer hours. You can find past issues of The Grapevine, our bimonthly newsletter, each of which is filled with enlightening articles, recapitulations of activities, and forecast of events in which you can participate. Minutes from the Executive Committee meetings can also be accessed there. Once you complete the 40 hours and become a Certified Master Gardener, you will always be a Clemson Master Gardener. The GGMGA is a volunteer organization. It keeps you up to date with the latest horticulture news, is a marvelous way to positively impact your community, and is a place to make new friends.
Any South Carolina Certified Master Gardener in the Greenville area may join the GGMGA. Contact our membership chairperson at [email protected] for more information. Look here for information on becoming a Master Gardener.
